What continuous integration is

Continuous integration means merging small changes into the main branch often, with an automated build and test run on each one. Problems appear minutes after they are introduced, while they are still cheap to fix.

Good CI practices

  • Small pull requests, merged at least daily.
  • A build and test run on every pull request.
  • A broken main branch fixed before anything else.
  • Fast pipelines: minutes, not hours.
  • Branch names that point to the work item.

CI in DevGob

DevGob does not run your builds: your CI engine does. DevGob connects to GitHub and brings the result of each run to the work item, so the team and the committee see whether the code behind a change is green.

  • Branches, commits and pull requests linked to each work item.
  • Pull request review state: approved, changes requested or commented.
  • GitHub Actions runs with status, branch, commit and duration.
  • A suggested branch name for each item.
  • A tab per repository branch with its pull requests and runs.

How DevGob helps

DevGob puts the state of your CI on each work item and change, so nobody has to open the pipeline to know whether a change is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Which CI tools are supported?

GitHub Actions today, through the GitHub integration. Azure DevOps and GitLab pipelines are on the roadmap.

Do I need to change my pipeline?

No. DevGob reads the runs through the GitHub integration and its webhooks; the pipeline stays as it is.

Is CI the same as CI/CD?

CI covers building and testing every change. CD adds delivering it to environments; together they form the path from commit to production.

DevOps with governance, on one record

DevGob plans the work and governs every change on its way to production: backlog, sprints, committee authorizations, install evidence and an audit trail.
